Travel nursing is usually when a nurse travels to a hospital to work on a short-term nursing contract for a period of thirteen weeks. Most of these contracts are under the umbrella of a travel nursing company who has a contract with the hospital.
Finding the best travel nursing company to suit your needs as a travel nurse can be somewhat of a challenge and if you choose the wrong company you could be in for a rough thirteen weeks. One way to get in touch with travel nursing companies is to simply go to your favorite internet search engine and type in the term 'travel nursing'. You will be bombarded with companies looking for nurses to travel. It's usually just a matter of filling in a simple form at a few of the companies' websites and letting the travel nurse recruiters call you.
Speaking with the recruiters from the travel nursing companies could be a bit intimidating for a first time traveler but as long as you're prepared, it shouldn't be a problem. It would be a good idea to have a checklist of questions ready to go when the recruiters call you.
It's really important to understand that compensation packages for travel nurses are much more than just the hourly rate. You need to consider things such as quality of housing provided, insurance, travel money, and tax advantages. You may also want to consider asking about a housing stipend that can be rolled into your hourly rate. If you are visiting a friend, or relative anyway, and don't need the housing, this could mean more money for you.
Another thing to verify is that the travel nursing company you sign on with has 24 hour support from their nursing department. Unexpected things happen and it will be good to know that there will be somebody there to help you if you need it. Travel nurse recruiters aren't usually experienced in specific nursing issues so most companies will have a nursing department and a director of nursing to assist in nursing related issues. You should verify that this is the case with the travel nurse company you are planning on signing up with.
Before accepting an assignment with a travel nursing company, make sure you do some research. There are numerous internet forums that nurses will post about their experiences with different travel nursing companies. You will likely see positive and negative things about the company. If you see something that troubles you, make sure you ask your recruiter about it and gauge their response.
The most important thing to remember when searching for the travel nursing company you want to work with is to remember to always do your homework. If you remember this one important thing, you should have an enjoyable travel nursing experience. |
